Biography

Dr. Barbara Jo Fleming is a Licensed Acupuncturist, Doctor of Chiropractic and Chinese herbalist. She integrates techniques ranging from gentle cranial work to traditional chiropractic adjustments with acupuncture, Chinese herbs and East/West nutritional counseling.This blend of the traditional and alternative creates a holistic approach to health care that works especially well—for pain, injury, emotional and digestive problems, hormone balancing, enhancing immune function, de-stressing and bringing the body into balance.Her style is very hands-on. Soft-tissue techniques complement the acupuncture and chiropractic. Strain-Counterstrain, Trigger Point Therapy, Myofascial Release Technique and Active Release Technique are just a few of the tools she uses when the condition calls for them. Her background in dance and yoga gives Dr. Fleming a unique, movement-oriented perspective for analysis and treatment of mucsculoskeletal problems.Dr. Fleming has done extensive post-graduate studies in both Western, researched-based nutrition and Chinese food-theory. Nutritional therapy enhances the body’s ability to heal at a deep layer. Working with ‘sensitive’ patients, especially those with auto-immune conditions, has given her insight into combining these approaches gently, for the most benefit.She has been practicing since 1992 and was a founding partner of the Bodysattva Healing Arts Center in Thousand Oaks, where she worked for 16 years.

Education

Dr. Fleming graduated from Oregon College of Oriental Medicine, a four year program with a Masters of Oriental Medicine and Acupuncture. In 1994 she completed a four week course of study at a Traditional Chinese Medicine teaching hospital in Harbin, China. She focused on Chinese herbal medicine during an additional year of study at Yosan University of Chinese Medicine, in Santa Monica.

Since receiving her Doctorate of Chiropractic (1992) from Western States Chiropractic College, she has completed more than 100 hours of postgraduate education in Sacro Occipital Technique (SOT), a gentle, neurologically-based technique that includes cranial therapy and effective pelvic stabilization methods.

She received a Bachelor’s degree in Dance from California Institute of the Arts in 1975, and later completed pre-med coursework at Hunter and Brooklyn Colleges in NYC.

Other Stuff

Before returning to the West Coast to study the healing arts, in Portland Oregon, Barbara Jo danced professionally, choreographed, and directed a modern dance company in NYC. She trained in ballet and gymnastics from age 13. During high school and college, she competed nationally and internationally in Gymnastics, placed 5th overall in the nation in 1971, and in competed in the 1972 final Olympic trials. For 18 years, she taught gymnastics in New York and on the West Coast.

Barbara Jo has been working with meditation and visualization techniques for more than three decades. She has made three trips to India for intensive meditation training. She currently practices Hatha yoga downtown in Fresno at Coil Yoga. Her meditation practice and experience as a choreographer give insight into the creative process; the process by which we create health and personal growth. She studies Toltec philosophy and practices with Victoria Allen and Raise Your State.

For the last decade, Barbara Jo has been honing her writing skills in science fiction and fantasy. In the fall of 2010 she had her first story published: “A Hymn for Celia” in the anthology “Spectors in Coal Dust”. She is on the board of directors for the Central Valley Writers Workshop.
